Bursa Malaysia Opens Lower As KLCI Drops 0.58% In Broad-Based Weakness

Bursa Malaysia opened weaker on Monday, with the FBM KLCI slipping 0.58% to 1,658.15 as selling pressure weighed across key index heavyweights.

The benchmark index opened at 1,668.78 before sliding to an intraday low of 1,657.30, reflecting broad-based weakness in early trade.

Market breadth was negative across the wider board, with plantation, banking and consumer-linked counters among the main drags on sentiment.

The FBM Emas also eased 0.44% to 12,311.12, while the FBMT 100 fell 0.48% to 12,142.42. The FBM 70 slipped 0.22% to 17,686.76, while the FBM Small Cap index was marginally lower at 15,253.00.

Sector performance was mixed but tilted lower. Construction dropped 0.56%, consumer products and services fell 0.44% and financial-related indices were broadly weaker. Energy was the only sector to hold in positive territory, edging up 0.03% in early trade.

Among thematic indices, broader market benchmarks also softened, with FBM100-related and ESG-linked indices largely in the red, reflecting cautious risk sentiment at the start of the session.

Trading activity in early turnover was concentrated in lower-priced counters, with ASTRO, RT and SRIDGE among the most actively traded stocks. ASTRO gained 1 sen to 7 sen, while RT fell 1 sen to 17 sen after opening below its IPO price.

In the broader market, top gainers included MPI, F&N, VITROX, SUNCON and KGB, while heavyweight decliners such as NESTLE, KLK, HLBANK and UTDPLT weighed on index performance.
