Changi Airport Unveils New Satellite Gate To Enhance Remote Flight Boarding

Changi Airport has completed construction of its first satellite gate, a standalone remote boarding and disembarkation facility designed to improve the passenger experience for flights using remote aircraft parking stands.

Changi Airport Group (CAG) said the facility is undergoing operational readiness preparations and will begin serving selected passenger flights by August 2026.

Located within the airfield, the 200 sqm satellite gate is equipped with two aerobridges, providing passengers with a fully sheltered, all-weather boarding and disembarkation experience. It is designed to support both narrow-body and wide-body aircraft while improving accessibility through a gently sloping 60m ramp suitable for wheelchair users, families with strollers and travellers with wheeled luggage.

CAG said the satellite gate extends the convenience of aerobridges to flights operating from remote stands, which are used to maximise apron capacity during peak travel periods. Currently, around 98% of passenger flights at Changi use contact gates with aerobridges.

The facility has also been built with sustainability in mind, operating as a zero-energy building powered entirely by rooftop solar panels and an off-grid battery system. Smart building features automatically activate air-conditioning based on flight schedules and enable wireless reporting of electrical faults for faster maintenance.

Executive Vice President of Engineering & Development Koh Ming Sue said every aspect of the satellite gate was designed to improve passenger comfort, accessibility, staff welfare and operational efficiency while incorporating sustainable and smart technologies.

Since May, more than 500 airport staff have undergone training and operational drills ahead of the facility’s launch.

CAG said the initial deployment on selected flights will help validate end-to-end passenger processes and inform future plans to develop additional satellite gates as passenger traffic continues to grow ahead of the opening of Terminal 5 in the mid-2030s.
