Malaysia has signed a Letter of Acceptance (SST) with MBDA France for the procurement of a surface-to-air missile (SAM) system to enhance the air defence capabilities of the Royal Malaysian Navy’s (TLDM) Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) fleet.
According to a Facebook post, the agreement was signed by Defence Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali during the Farnborough International Airshow (FIA) 2026 in the United Kingdom on 20 July 2026.
The procurement serves as a key supporting contract for the LCS project, ensuring the vessels are equipped with an integrated air defence capability that meets TLDM’s operational requirements.
The Defence Ministry said the acquisition reflects the government’s continued commitment to strengthening Malaysia’s maritime defence capabilities amid evolving geopolitical challenges.
The addition of the SAM system is expected to improve the LCS fleet’s ability to respond to aerial threats while enhancing the overall strategic readiness of Malaysia’s naval assets.
